The First Real Egg

Hope did it again...for real this time!
Look at this beauty!

Isn't it glorious?!?!
 My favorite color in the world.
{We picked this breed for my beauty loving heart!}

A funny story: when I was agonizing over the paint colors for the farmhouse, my good friend in Houston said, "Stop stressing! Just take a bunch of those pale colored eggs to the paint store and tell them to match the colors!" {This from a friend who loves bright colors, but knows my style. And she's so right: most of my house looks like pale eggshells!}

The first eggs are so sweet and petite.

{Hope's egg compared to a neighbor's egg.}

And I just have to show you...

...how great these stoneware egg crates look filled with farm fresh eggs.
{Our new glass-front refrigerator allows us to admire our eggs all day!}

Thanks for sharing in our excitement!

P.S. Thanks for the tips about added calcium and oyster shells to help harden the shells. Hope's first egg was soft and squishy, but this one was perfect! No added calcium yet, but we'll keep an eye on that. And she laid this one in a nest of her own making...not in the coop, but in the barn. We'll try the golf ball trick in the nesting boxes.

  1. Gorgeous color, Linsey! Now you MUST share pics of your glass front refrigerator. I need to clean mine out and reorganize and I'm sure yours would inspire! Soccer season is wrapping up and that means it's time for me to spend more time in the kitchen again (yay!)... but my fridge is a mess. Bringing order back is on my list of things to do, STAT! :)

    1. If it makes you feel any better, my glass front fridge isn't all perfect and orderly. But we love it anyway. I haven't felt the inspiration to talk about the refrigerator until today. Maybe a post will happen one of these days. People are always wanting to look in our refrigerator to see what we eat (knowing we're into fresh and natural food), so a glass fridge is a great way to give everyone a view! ;)

  2. Me too! I want to see your glass front refrigerator! I've always wanted one! Would love to see:) Her eggs are just perfect! Do they taste different than the old white standard eggs? I hope that's not a dumb question!

    1. Not a dumb question at all. The shell color doesn't affect taste at all. But I will say that farm fresh eggs are far tastier than eggs you buy in the store. And the better you feed your chickens, the better the eggs. (Though we can't control all that our chickens eat. They are very free range!)

  5. Hi, Linsey!
    Happy summer! I hope you and your family are well. And all the animals, too :) I've been really busy with work and traveling. Just finished a project in CT. Looking forward to relaxing this summer, and spending time in Maine. These eggs are so simple and beautiful. Just like your lovely note cards with the eggs and nests. Perhaps new stationary series featuring these eggs?
    Take care,
    Loi

  6. Linsey!
    I just got your comment about my summer reading list. So I hopped over here and discovered you live in FRANKLIN! So do I. We will have to meet in town sometime for coffee or wine. I have a garden out back and we are investing to buy our own farm in the county in the next couple of years. So fun!
